How to get a good night’s sleep

It’s common knowledge that sleep is vital for our general health and wellbeing. But getting a good night’s sleep can sometimes be difficult so here are our tips to help you get some shuteye.

Go to bed at the same time every day

Stick to a regular schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, even on the weekends. This repetition will help get your body into a regular routine and help to establish a healthy sleep pattern. It’s also important to avoid sleeping during the day.

Do something relaxing to switch off

Find something that helps you to relax each evening to help you switch off before bedtime. Activities such as reading, listening to calming music or taking a bath can help to prepare your mind and body for sleep and clear your head before bed.

Avoid stimulants

Stay away from stimulants such as coffee and alcohol in the evenings. Not only are these substances harmful to your physical and mental health but it can disrupt your sleeping pattern as well as your ability to fall asleep. Light from screens can affect your sleep too so stay away from phones, computers and TVs.

Make sure your bedroom is comfortable

The room you sleep in should be quiet, dark and a comfortable temperature. Try to keep anything that triggers stress away from your bedroom and check that the bedding is comfortable and clean.

Clear your head of the day’s activities

Before heading to bed each night create a ritual of writing down anything that is bothering you or needs attending to and then revisit it the following day. This way, you have acknowledged anything that needs to be attended to before bed but given yourself permission to now relax and seek out a good night’s sleep before tackling the list.

Getting a good night’s sleep and taking time out to relax and unwind will help to keep you physically and mentally healthy. Follow our five tips above for sweet dreams every night.
