The Benefits of Goal-Setting
Goal-setting is a great tool to help you achieve something that you desire. Aside from the benefits of achieving your desired goals, setting and working towards personal goals of any kind can have many positive outcomes for your health. Here are 5 of them:
Well-defined goals set a level of expectation and accountability that motivates you into action, especially when you set a specific deadline.
A sense of meaning
Goals can provide you with a meaningful purpose and sense of direction, which is important to living a fulfilling life. The reward of attaining the goal can also be something to look forward to.
More focused and decisive
It is easier to make decisions confidently when you have clear goals to lead your decision-making. For example, if your goal is to cut down to 3 cigarettes per day and someone offers you a fourth cigarette, the correct answer to achieve your goal is much clearer than if you had a general intention to smoke less. Each decision made for the benefit of your goals will reinforce your conviction to yourself and those around you.
A sense of self-control
By being clear about what you want and actively working towards it, you will feel more in control of your life. It can also be empowering to notice your progress towards a specific goal in a measurable form.
It should be no surprise that goal-setting leads us to higher levels of achievement. A Harvard study suggests that a 30% increase in academic performance was seen between struggling students that set goals and those that didn’t. Achievement can boost self-esteem, provide a sense of accomplishment and lead to a more positive outlook on life.
Of course, setting the goal is only a small part of the process. Next week we will reveal some tips to help you succeed in achieving your goals.
