Living with physical and social disabilities has been an ongoing challenge for Adam (22) and his family, but thanks to the support of Black Swan Health’s NDIS services, Adam has dramatically improved his physical abilities and lifestyle.

Adam self-manages his NDIS plan with his primary carer, which gives him complete control over the services and providers that suit his preferences and schedule. For Adam and his mum, Black Swan Health’s therapy and support services were a perfect fit.

Since his first physiotherapy session, Adam has doubled his cardiovascular endurance and upper body strength, along with other significant improvements in his core strength and balance.

“I’ve improved so much,” said Adam proudly.

This success has been built on the great relationship Adam with his Physiotherapist, Simone. “We get along well and have the occasional laugh,” said Adam. “She adapts exercises when I’m not feeling the best and changes it up when I get bored.”

Adam also participates in Black Swan Health’s physiotherapist-led group exercise program for all abilities, in a supportive and social environment.

Adam has thrived in this group environment, which is evident to all. “Adam has been an absolute delight to have in the classes. He is so self-motivated, enthusiastic and consistent,” said Simone. “He is already an integral part of the Black Swan Health Strength-to-Strength ‘group’ and the other participants draw inspiration from his efforts in the gym.”

It’s spending time with his Black Swan Health Support Worker that has made the greatest impact for Adam. “I look forward to our weekly catch ups very much.” Said Adam. “We get to experience different things and I’m learning to like new stuff.”

Adam’s mum believes his Support Worker is an important male figure in Adam’s life. “They go shopping for clothes together and do those kinds of things that Adam wants a male opinion on.” This genuine friendship has increased his social skills and confidence immensely.

“The biggest improvement I’ve noticed is that he’s open to trying new things. Before it was “no, no, no,” but now he’s willing to give things a go,” said his mum. “We’re grateful to Black Swan Health and feel really fortunate to have found such a caring and compassionate team”.

It’s this personal and individualised approach to care that saw Black Swan Health win the 2017 Award for Overall Excellence at this year’s Disability Support Awards.
