About the Program

Our counselling services offer free to low cost assistance for people experiencing mental health problems. This service is designed to provide GPs with support from allied health professionals in treating people with a mental health disorder.

The service is particularly suitable for low income earners and is available to all age groups.

Registered clinicians can provide the most appropriate counselling strategies which include:

  • Psycho-education (including motivational interviewing)
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Cognitive interventions
  • Relaxation strategies
  • Skills training
  • Interpersonal therapy

Areas of Specialty:

Suicide Prevention Program
  • Available for people who are at low to moderate risk of self-harm or suicide, and people who have been affected by suicide
  • Program referral can be made by a GP
  • Program provides access to mental health professionals who specialise in the area and who can provide referral options at the end of the counselling period

To refer into the Suicide Prevention Program, use this form

Children Services
  • Available for children aged up to 12 years who have, or are at risk of developing, a mental, behavioural or emotional issue
  • Program referral can be made by a GP, school principal, school psychologist, child health nurse or director of early childhood services
  • Program can also assist with building and gaining confidence in parenting skills

To refer into Children Services, use this form

Perinatal Depression (PND)
  • Available for women or their partners who are pregnant or have a child under 12 months of age
  • Program referral can be made by a GP, obstetrician, midwife or maternal and child health nurse
  • Program provides access to mental health professionals who specialise in perinatal depression

To refer into PND, use this form

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI)
  • Available for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI) experiencing mental health issues
  • Program referral can be made by a GP
  • Program provides access to mental health professionals who have completed culturally specific training and are aware of specific issues affecting ATSI people

Referral Process:

Referrals to this Program require a GP Mental Health Care Plan (Item 2700/2701/2715/2717). GPs are no longer required to have completed Level 1 training or to be registered with Medicare Australia to refer under this Program. Please send completed referral forms via fax (9242 1584) or email to counselling@blackswanhealth.com.au.
